Today, Doug kept the topic of his sermon a surprise–which I liked, because it gave the Holy Spirit even more creative liberty. I got images of Jesus at different points of his ministry asking his Father (the Jaimie Winship question that will change your life), “Father, what do you want me to know about this?” And, ‘What do you want to do through me?’ I saw Jesus confronting corruption in the Temple, herding the animals out and turning over the tables of the money handlers who clenched their fists in rage. The priests had oppressed the people by demanding they pay an unholy tax to enter the Temple to worship God–people who were already poor and starving because of Rome’s brutality and greed.
Then, Doug began his sermon and, low and behold, he focused on the big business of politics and its fear mongering that divides our nation; we get caught in a fear–anger–despair cyclone when we base our hope on a political party/ideology. (Confession: just last week I got so unnerved I stopped watching all political news.)
Separately, Doug and I both arrived at the same place—the battle between fear and Love; fear oppresses but Love, namely Jesus, sets people free with a beautiful message… ‘I love you. You’re free now. You don’t have to listen to the lies. You don’t have to be afraid. Keep your eyes on me and I will live in you–I will live through you. Let's love this world together and turn the tables on fear.’
(Jesus said,) “Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.” –Luke 12:32.
